What format do I have to make a file so my friend can read it on her Nook?

Me and my friend are sharing a Nook Library, and wanted to know how to make files so we can read them on our nooks? Since we like to share stuff we write with eachother and our friends. The lady at the book store said we could put PDFs on the nook to read our own files, how do we make a PDF?
