Conflict freespace (1995 game) on my computer (2011 laptop). When i load it, blackscreen and no response. Why?

I bought Conflict Freespace (1995 game) on my computer (2011 laptop). When i try to load it, it comes up with a black seen and doesnt respond. Why would this be? Too old of a game for such a new computer with windows 7?
